Types of web hosting services

Web Hosting based on OS- Before hosting any web content, one must first decide the operating system that the server will run on. In this regard, by far the most popular operating systems are Windows running Internet Information Server (IIS) or Unix/Linux running Apache Server. In comparing the two, it isn’t really possible for prescribing one as being ‘better’.

Windows is a much more complex (and expensive- Linux is free) operating system to use, thanks to its GUI. However, given the universal popularity of Windows in most computers, compatibility becomes a major argument in its favor. Windows allows web sites to run Active Server Pages, and Microsoft servers also allow the integration of SQL databases. If you intend to create your site using ASP, FrontPage, the .NET environment, Windows Streaming Media, Access, MSSQL, or any of the other Microsoft proprietary technologies then you Windows would be the best option.

The advantage of Linux (other than its cost-effectiveness) is that it is generally more stable, as it consumes less system resources. Linux and its related cousin-OS UNIX both have this advantage. Linux is compatible with the PHP programming language, and UNIX offers the best possible security (although at the cost of certain features). UNIX gives a lot of control over server configuration than Windows, but is much harder to operate because of its text based interface

The choice, therefore, depends on the type of content intended to be featured and the tools for creating it- as with everything else, in other words, on the user’s individual and personal needs.

Root Server/Semi managed Hosting- In this system, the user has root access (meaning that he has administrator-level log-on to the server and can take complete control of it) of a dedicated or virtual private server. The user manages the software and working of the server, while the service provider manages the hardware and installation. It is thus a more flexible and customizable method of managing the server than with a managed dedicated hosting (assuming you have the necessary technical know-how), while still not having to bear the burden of actual physical maintenance.

Ecommerce Web Hosting- This is a web hosting of any given type which uses an SSL (secure socket layer) for encrypting data which is given by users for making online credit card payments. This is used when the web content offers goods or services for sale to the user in return for online payments and internet banking.

Adult Web Hosting- This is a means of hosting adult pictures and videos on the net. The general requirement of such servers is to have comparatively less traffic and to be able to completely and uniformly regulate it at all times.

Blog / WordPress Hosting- Weblog (‘blog’) software is a content management system for creating, editing and publishing blog posts and the most popular blogging software today is WordPress. Blogs generally come under the classification of free web hosting, as the weblog applications are usually available as a free download or are open-source licenses. Some are required to be accessed directly through the developer’s hosts, i.e., WordPress and BlogSpot. In blog hosting services, access is typically restricted only to publishing the content and other background design.
