Choosing a domain name for your reseller hosting business

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

Hello,

As you might know, Courtix Hosting started as a company with one reseller hosting account, and grew to a company with over 10 servers till date, and we’re still growing. Now it’s the time to give our customers a helping hand! We will be writing a series of reseller hosting articles, which will help you build your reseller hosting company from the ground till top.

Here are some of the articles which will be included under our reseller hosting tutorials:

  • Choosing a domain name for your reseller hosting business
  • Choosing the best reseller hosting plan
  • Setting up your domain reseller account with Courtix Hosting
  • Setting up an SSL Certificate on your reseller hosting website
  • Configuring Your Reseller Hosting Account from Webhost Manager
  • Setup Private Nameservers for your reseller hosting plan
  • and more…

First thing to do when you want to start a reseller hosting business, is to choose a domain name. Choosing a domain name is the most important step in setting up your reseller hosting business, as it would be really hard to switch to a different domain name later on.

From our experience, the best reseller hosting domain name is a domain which satisfies the following conditions:

  • Short and Easy to remember: Your reseller hosting domain names should be easy, short to remember, and should not cause any misspellings.
  • Register additional extensions for your domain: Sometimes, it is useful to register the .net, .org , .info versions of your domain name, in addition to the .com version. The idea is to safeguard the goodwill your domain commands.
  • Register related domain names: Let’s say you operate a company called Anyname Hosting, you might want to register anynamehosting.com , anyname.com, anynamewebhosting.com, etc. If you do this early in your business’ lifecycle, you can save a lot of litigation money when you have grown into a large business.
  • Register a catchy domain name: A catchy domain name intrigues people and invites them to visit your reseller hosting website. For example, flyingball.com makes visitors think about how a ball could fly, and they enter your website into their browser, because they want to know how a ball could fly.
  • Brandable: If you are marketing a product or supporting a cause, then your domain name should be brandable. Brandable means that it should stick into the heads of the people who see it. A brandable domain name should also reflect your website’s identity, i.e. resellerhosting.com should sell reseller hosting, not light bulbs! :)
  • Do not use dashes or numbers: Using these characters may confuse your clients and make your reseller hosting domain name harder for them to remember.

Ideally, all of the above points should apply for your domain name. However, not all of them will apply most of the time. Just make sure your reseller hosting domain name includes the word “host”, “webhost”, “hosting” , or “webhosting”, that will do the trick, and help you fare better with search result rankings as well (courtixhosting.com , for example).

That’s all for today, happy reseller hosting domain shopping. :)

We hope this reseller hosting domain shopping article is helpful. Our next reseller hosting article will discuss choosing the best reseller hosting plan to start your hosting business and grow.

To lose a domain name means losing the online identity of your business or your own online identity if the domain name was registered in your name.

A domain name can be registered and re-registered only for the length of one year, it is advised that you get it renewed every year instead of getting it done in lump sum for a few years at once. If you own a lot of domains and order all for years together you may totally forget one of them or be in confusion. But, if you register it on a yearly basis you must remember to get it renewed as yearly as two weeks before the expiry date. How does a domain name work?

Many people are not aware of the importance of a domain name for their business and therefore end up with fancy but useless domain names which they have to change sooner or later when they realize the mistake they’ve made. Changing a domain name for a business is not a simple process and can be quite a task as most of the visitors from the previous domain name would have associated you and your business with that domain name. It is a process that is equivalent to rebranding a product, remember the pain FedEx took to ensure that (more…)

Whether you own a small or a large business enterprise on the World Wide Web your unique identity can be symbolized only by a domain name. You can also use a domain name to represent yourself as an individual over the internet. No two persons or businesses can have a similar domain name, though it is possible by having a different extension, e.g., www.domain.com or www.domain.org or www.domain.biz etc. Even though this proposition is possible US govt. and other international laws impose many restrictions on using a domain name that is a trademark registered to (more…)
