Types of Web Hosting Services

Virtual Private Server (VPS) Hosting- A single physical server is partitioned into multiple servers, each independent of each other in terms of resources and operating system. This ensures that each user is not affected by how much resources the other users are consuming, giving him complete and independent control over his server environment as in a dedicated hosting. However, most of the web hosts provide a lot less in terms of actual allocated resources than what is offered in their advertisements, in the hopes that the user will never utilize the virtual server at peak capacity. This can lead to the same problems as in a shared hosting environment when the system is not robust enough to handle peak level performances of the virtual servers. Otherwise, it offers the best of both the worlds of shared hosting as well as dedicated servers, and is the ideal choice if you require full control and independent service, but not really as much in terms of resources as a dedicated server provides.

Managed Hosting Service- It is a dedicated web hosting service with added maintenance services such as reporting and monitoring, load balancing, security, setup, system administration and software updates being provided to the user, so the server runs as optimal efficiency without requiring the user to oversee it personally. The user thus gets all the advantages of a dedicated server without having to go through the hassle of managing it. Accordingly, it costs a lot more as well.

Colocation Web Hosting Service- In this system, the server is owned by the user. The physical space for housing it, along with networking infrastructure is provided by data centers where, typically, hundreds of other users use the same facilities. The user is responsible for the server through remote access, while the web host is responsible for providing the network facility of the data center. The service is customized exactly as the user requires it, and the use of the telecommunications and network services of the data center by multiple users result in very effective cost cutting. However, since the server equipment has to be provided by the user himself, the total cost is still higher than in any other form of web hosting. Also, though the web host is obligated only towards maintenance and upkeep of the server equipment- responsibility in case of any problems still lies with the user to whom it belongs. However, the largest and most popular websites generally use this service because of the flexibility and customization in terms of service it affords them. Data centers also provide a fairly secure environment for housing the servers.

Reseller Web Hosting- This service allows a user to further allocate his allotted server space and resources to host websites on behalf of third parties. An account of this type allows you to start an e-commerce venture by reselling your server to further users for money. However, it also effectively puts you in the shoes of a web host yourself, and requires you to have a thorough technical knowledge for the maintenance and upkeep of your server so as to be able to provide support to your own clients.
