Part – 3 Types of web hosting services – large scale
This third part of the article series titled, Types of web hosting talks about the types of web hosting that are used by large organizations at a very large scale. These types of web hosting services depending on the company’s philosophy and business plan provide an infrastructure featuring bleeding edge technology or make the best out of minimal resources by depending on assembled hardware. The aim of these large scale operations based web hosting services can be many, some may aim to speed up content delivery while some may aim to distribute the load on the servers by duplicating the content across a group of servers, think Google and Wikipedia.
Clustered Web Hosting- In this type of hosting, the same content is hosted by multiple servers (or nodes) at once, thus distributing the load and increasing the traffic capacity and availability, and also eliminates the dependency on any one particular server for keeping your content hosted. While guaranteeing stability, this also results in increased costs increases the infrastructural requirement.
Cloud Web Hosting- This is similar to clustered hosting, only instead of actually owning the node servers, your data is instead hosted by an outsourced system owned by third parties. This gives the same level of continuous data accessibility as clustered hosting, but is much more cost effective since most of them call on you to pay only when the information hosted by a node is actually used. However, it also has the disadvantage of handing over your data completely to third parties, so you have to rely entirely on their good faith to keep your data secure and confidential. It results in an effective loss of control over your system
Grid Hosting- Grind hosting is a form of large scale clustered hosting where multiple nodes comprising loosely coupled computers (which are generally also widely dispersed geographically) are used to split up the data being hosted and process it in parallel. It is regarded as an alternative to supercomputing. However, due to the sheer extent of such a project, only multinational entities and governments are capable of creating such a hosting.
Email Hosting- This service runs email servers providing premium email (professional grade email with increased storage space and additional features such as virus scanning and backup recovery, supported by fees rather than by advertisements) facilities. They cater mainly to Small and Medium Enterprises, since larger companies usually host their own email servers.
File/Image Hosting- These systems allow the storage of static content (such as files or images that are not web pages) on the servers that can be accessed by third parties via web or FTP. Generally, image hosting is free, since it tends to be supported by advertisements.
Local Hosting- This essentially means setting up a web server on your own computer. This form of hosting has the maximum possible flexibility as you get to decide which devices/computers may connect to your server, and all the hardware and machines are in your direct control. Of course, because of its micro scale it has very few practical uses, but it is still an effective way of moving files around between machines.
